About Cherrapunjee & Mawsynram

Historically famous as the wettest place on Earth, Cherrapunjee (locally Sohra) sits on the southern edge of the Khasi Hills facing the Bangladesh plains. Its dramatic geography makes it the waterfall capital of Northeast India — Nohkalikai Falls (India's tallest plunge waterfall, at 340m), the tiered Wei Sawdong, and the wide Seven Sisters Falls, above limestone cave systems like Mawsmai and Arwah.

Nearby Mawsynram now holds the official Guinness World Record for highest average rainfall, edging out Cherrapunjee itself — a quieter, less commercial alternative built around the Mawjymbuin Cave, home to a naturally formed stalagmite shaped like a Shiva Lingam, and the Jakrem hot springs.

How to Reach Cherrapunjee & Mawsynram

1

From Shillong (~55 km, ~1.5-2 hrs)

A scenic drive south across the plateau, through grasslands and deep gorges.

2

From Guwahati Airport (~150 km, ~4.5 hrs)

A manageable single-day transit via Shillong.

3

Sohra to Mawsynram (~2 hrs)

Though geographically close, the two are separated by a deep gorge, needing a scenic drive around the valley.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Cherrapunjee still the wettest place on earth?

Mawsynram, a nearby village, currently holds the official Guinness World Record for highest average rainfall, but Cherrapunjee still receives extraordinary rainfall, especially through the monsoon.

Can Mawsmai Cave be visited by children?

Yes — it's well-lit and accessible, though the pathways can be narrow and slippery, so supervision is needed.

Are the waterfalls visible in winter?

During the dry months (December-February), many of Sohra's famous waterfalls, including Seven Sisters, dry up significantly — visit May-November for the full spectacle.
