About Tawang
At around 10,000 feet near the borders of Bhutan and Tibet, Tawang is anchored by Galden Namgyal Lhatse (Tawang Monastery) — founded in 1680–81 under the guidance of the 5th Dalai Lama, and the largest monastery in India and second-largest in the world after the Potala Palace in Lhasa.
Reaching Tawang is as much the point as arriving. The road climbs through the tea country of the Assam plains, into the pine-clad hills around Dirang, over the snowbound Sela Pass, and down into the Tawang valley. Beyond the town, Sangetsar Lake (Madhuri Lake) and the high ridge at Bum La on the Indo-China LAC are the natural extensions for travellers with a few extra days.
How to Reach Tawang
Plains Gateway (Guwahati / Tezpur)
Pickup from Guwahati Airport (GAU) or Tezpur — Tezpur is the more efficient foothill start, cutting roughly 4 hours off the total transit time.
Acclimatisation Ascent — Tezpur to Dirang/Bomdila (~195 km, ~6-7 hrs)
Cross into Arunachal at Bhalukpong, following the Kameng River through orchards and forest to overnight in Dirang (~1,560m) for acclimatisation.
The Mountain Pass — Dirang to Tawang (~135 km, ~5-6 hrs)
Climb over Sela Pass (~4,170m / 13,700 ft) past Sela Lake and the Jaswant Garh war memorial, descending into the Tawang basin.
