About Dzukou Valley
Straddling the border between Nagaland and Manipur at roughly 2,400 metres, Dzukou Valley is widely considered one of India's more striking trekking landscapes — rolling knolls carpeted in dwarf bamboo, cut through by crystal-clear streams in deep stone channels.
Through the monsoon months the meadows bloom with the rare Dzukou Lily (Lilium chitrangadae) — closely related to Manipur's Shirui Lily, found nowhere else. In autumn and winter the air clears for sharp views of Mount Japfu and genuinely dark night skies. Since the valley is reached only by steep stone trails from Viswema or Zakhama, it stays free of motor vehicles entirely.
How to Reach Dzukou Valley
Dimapur / Kohima Pickup
Arrive at Dimapur Airport (DMU) or railway station; we transfer you through the Kohima hills to the southern Angami villages, roughly 3-4 hours.
Trailhead Transfer (Viswema / Zakhama)
An early-morning drop at the Viswema trailhead or the steeper Zakhama entry gate.
The Climb (3-5 hours)
Stone staircases through oak forest to the ridge top, then an easier walk across dwarf-bamboo paths into the main valley campsite.

Which trail is better: Viswema or Zakhama?
Viswema is longer with a gentler ridge walk after a steep initial ascent; Zakhama is a shorter, steeper stone staircase. We usually recommend climbing via Viswema and descending via Zakhama.
Are there bathrooms in Dzukou Valley?
The trekker's rest house at the top has basic concrete toilet stalls — expect rustic backcountry conditions beyond that.
Can beginners do the Dzukou Valley trek?
Yes — moderate cardiovascular fitness is enough. Trekking poles and broken-in hiking boots make the stone steps considerably easier.
