20 km west of Kohima, Khonoma is a centuries-old Western Angami village with a formidable history — its warriors fought a defining battle against the British in October 1879, the last organised Naga resistance to colonial rule.
Its more recent fame comes from a different kind of resistance: after 300 endangered Blyth's tragopans were killed in a single week of hunting in 1998, the village council banned hunting outright, created the Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary, and earned the title of India's first "green village" in 2005. Ten kilometres further, the smaller village of Dzuleke has gone even further — no mobile network, a strict rotational homestay system to share income fairly, and a real sense of remove from everything.
