About Majuli
Sitting in the Brahmaputra, Majuli is recognised as the world's largest river island. Since the 15th century it's been the centre of Assamese neo-Vaishnavite culture, founded by the saint-scholar Srimanta Sankardeva, and today the island holds Satras — monastic centres where monks devote themselves to classical Sattriya dance, mask-making and agriculture.
Erosion has cost the island roughly a third of its original area over the past century, which makes the place feel all the more worth visiting properly rather than rushing through. Beyond the monasteries, Majuli is home to the Mishing tribe, living in stilt houses and weaving distinctive textiles — a place to slow down, rent a bicycle, and move at the river's pace.

Drive to Nimati Ghat
The main gateway, roughly 14 km from Jorhat Airport.
The Brahmaputra Crossing
A RO-RO ferry or motorised wooden boat carries vehicles and passengers across, roughly 1-1.5 hours, to Kamalabari or Aflamukh ghat.

Yes — we use the RO-RO (Roll-on/Roll-off) ferry service at Nimati Ghat to bring our SUVs directly onto the island.
Is one day enough for Majuli?
A day trip is possible, but we'd recommend at least one overnight to catch the river sunset and the slower pace of village life.
What's the accommodation like?
Mostly eco-camps, bamboo stilt cottages and homestays. There are no 5-star hotels, but the properties we use are comfortable, clean and genuinely atmospheric.
