About Sivasagar & Charaideo
The Ahom Dynasty ruled the Brahmaputra Valley for roughly six centuries (1228–1826), repelling repeated Mughal invasions and leaving behind a distinctive architectural legacy. Sivasagar (formerly Sibsagar) was their capital, and remains the centre of Assamese royal history — built around a large 18th-century reservoir with the Rang Ghar (a royal sports pavilion, widely said to be among the oldest surviving amphitheatres in Asia), the Talatal Ghar (a military palace with tunnels, partly sealed off today by the ASI for preservation), and the Shiva Dol temple.
About 30 km away, the Charaideo Maidams — earthen mounds covering underground royal burial vaults — are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and represent a distinct royal burial tradition unlike anywhere else in India. The two sites are almost always visited together as a single, rich day of Ahom history.
